Jess and Leslie are neighbors who are tired of their uneventful school life. Leslie takes Jess into the forest and shares with him her world of Terabithia where they escape their everyday world to find a little adventure. Through this world, they build a bond and friendship that is ultimately tested through decisions made by one of them. Can their friendship survive? Can their friendship save them from feeling neglected?
Evaluative Criteria: Plot and Style
Jess’ life changed the moment he
laid eyes on Leslie, his new neighbor. She was first noticed amongst the fence
dividing their farms, and from that day forward the setting would be crucial in
their relationship. Though this book was written more than 30 years ago, we
still see the relevance of the setting described. Through the setting we see
and make connections to the power of nature and small town life. Their
environment hosted their created land, Terebithia, which helped both Jess and
Leslie escape their negligent home lives. We see this through the style
Paterson chose to incorporate in her writing. Some sketches were included, and
since this book made a huge impact early on, we can empathize with their plight
to find solace in a place other than “home.” Through the incorporations of
images, the setting was set, which ultimately contributed to the depth of the
novel.
