The Negro League is a part of baseball that not many of us hear about. In this book, we get a glimpse of how America's favorite sport came to be because of some unsung heroes. Through the process of traveling, team dynamics, and politics involved with the enterprise, we see how the beginnings weren't always so easy to go through.
Evaluative Criteria: Accuracy and Style
In Kadir Nelson's work about the Negro Baseball League, we are shown how both accuracy and style can combine in nonfiction. Nelson has included larger than life illustrations of the players from the league, and this shows the reader the impact that these players left on the game. In the illustrations, players and other baseball officials are depicted as large and heroic which adds to the tale of their struggle to play. In addition to the images, Nelson added many footnotes for those readers who still need that extra support. This shows how much pride he had in showcasing his knowledge and research on the subject. In the end, when you combine both they style and the accuracy, you are given a wonderful tale that had been left untold for too long.
