How They Croaked by Georgia Bragg

Summary:

Georgia Bragg's book brings in history with the topic of death. Bragg introduces readers to many important historical figures, and ultimately shows how their last breath was taken in the process. Famous people include Marie Curie, Montezuma, Anne Boleyn, and Susan B. Anthony. Based on her choice on who to include, Bragg brings in people from different countries and times to share with young readers. This is important because many children will be more open to read a historical book if they knew that it is not only driven on facts alone.

Evaluative Criteria: Organization

In Georgia Bragg's book How they Croaked, we are introduced to the organization of Nonfiction information.Although the subject of death and the way they died can be a little gruesome, Bragg includes other information to make the subject easier to tread. Bragg uses dates, caricatures, facts, and story telling to bring people from history to life. By organizing the individual stories as separate entities rather than one large book of death, Bragg allows the reader to pick and choose which sections they would like to read. Once the reader has chosen, Bragg includes other facts and tidbits so that each tale of a demise also has information about the person's life (children, famliy members, things and hobbies they did in life, etc.) to make the historical figure more real and not so tragic. This book is a great way to get older readers a chance to learn information about many without having to search in multiple locations.

Mini-Lesson:

Although the topic may be a little macabre, using this book to introduce a historical figure may help you bridge the gap between students and nonfiction and biographies. You can use History.com to include videos regarding the individual so that you can also integrate technology in the mix.
