In Stephen Pastis' Timmy Failure, we are introduced to Timmy and his trusty sidekick Total the polar bear. Timmy and Total are private detectives that are hired to solve cases within their small town; they would be able to be successful were it not for their archenemy who also serves as a private detective and is better at solving cases. Regardless of their "un"success rate, we join Timmy and Total in their adventures and find ourselves laughing along the way.
Evaluative Criteria: Setting and Style
Timmy Failure is no ordinary
detective, he has incredible skills for deduction, and let’s not forget his
lovable partner Total the polar bear. In Stephan Pastis’ book, we are
introduced to a style that is completely different than the other books shared.
His inclusion of sketches and journal entries brings out a beauty that is not
widely seen within these categories of books. What makes this book so life-like
is the fact that he did not name the town illustrated; this allows the readers,
especially younger readers, to make connections with the book to their town.
Landmarks such as “City Zoo” and “Bowlersville USA” do not limit the setting,
but allow many cities to be represented through the reader.
Go to: Total Failure Website to use with the book. You will find printables to use with your kids as well as flash cards with vocabulary words and so much more!!
