Rosa by Nikki Giovanni

Summary:

In Rosa, we are taken through the daily events that led to Rosa Parks' bus boycott. From the morning that she was ready to start her day to the events that took place after her arrest, this book helps readers visualize Rosa's life. It intertwines history from Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. in a way that makes the introduction to the Civil Rights Movement easier to comprehend.

Evaluative Criteria: Design

Nikki Giovanni's take on the famous bus boycott by Rosa Parks is a great example of both design and style. Through the narration of the story we see fitting illustrations combined with words to produce a strong image. Though illustrated, there is still an obvious texture added to those illustrations that make the characters look life-like at times. It is also not entirely traditional because words and pictures come together on all the pages rather than separately. Through this, we receive the story of Rosa Parks that is condensed to teach younger students, while still keeping its nonfiction information. This is a great novel to use with young readers because the information does not overpower the work, rather it keeps it simple and understandable.
