The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch

Summary:

In The Paperbag Princess, we are introduced to a very beautiful girl named Elizabeth. Elizabeth lived a life of luck; she had money, a nice wardrobe, and was engaged to a handsome prince, Ronald, up until a dragon came a wiped out everything she owned, including Ronald. Elizabeth outwits the dragon until he collapses from exhaustion. On her quest to save Ronald, she finds that he is not so charming after all, and leaves with nothing but her happiness and strength.

Visual Element and Evaluative Criteria: Line and Style

In The Paper Bag Princess, Munsch uses line to show distance and size where the dragon is concerned. This can help young readers understand dimensions. What line has done for the illustrations Munsch's style has done for words. His use of dialogue reverses the stature of the dragon and the princess; while the dragon is evidently larger than Elizabeth, but Elizabeth is more clever.
