Visual Element and Evaluative Criteria:

Sendak's use of line to bring his character's to life. His illustrations show the detail of the fur on the monsters, the leaves of the forest, and the background of the scenery. While the lines contribute to  the illustrations, they also contributed to the plot and sequence of the book. The lines show the traveling and movements of the monsters and Max up until the point where he leaves them to go home.
