This Is Not My Hat by J. Klassen

Summary:

A little fish steals a hat from a bigger fish because it is just his size. As he is heading towards his new escape, he trusts that his secret will be kept. Unfortunately, it is not so, his confidant points his directions out. Our little fish no longer has his hat.

Visual Element and Evaluative Criteria: Composition and Theme

This Is Not My Hat shows composition through the dominating use of color as well as texture. By illustrating the black ocean in contrast to the beautiful leaves Klassen shows depth and dimension. this can be seen when little fish is traveling into his hiding place, soon to be found by big fish. This leads us to the important theme of the book and the topic of stealing something that is not yours. The way that the author personifies the fish to teach the lesson that most children need to learn. Klassen does this through his use of illustrations as little fish narrates his adventures as big fish follows along.
