Spiders by Nic Bishop

Summary:

Spiders come in all shapes and sizes. Thanks to Nic Bishop's book we can learn more about their types and characteristics through his use of up-close photography and examples.

Evaluative Criteria: Design

They have eight legs and eight eyes, some swing and some jump, spiders really terrify! In Nic Bishop's nonfiction work we see how he brings these horrific creatures to life through his own photography. The design he chose to create his book is one that interweaves live photos with pertinent information. This enables readers to view the life of a spider with interest despite his use of higher vocabulary. Children who would read this book would find connections to the words he uses and the images they see. As we end the book, we notice that he has also included singular pictures of the spiders he used, and he has listed their names which makes future research a possibility. Bishop's work is one that makes nonfiction approachable for the emergent readers.
